Sleep Procedure

1. Introduction

At Be. Independent Day Nursery, we recognize the importance of sleep for the health and development of young children. This Sleep Procedure Policy outlines our commitment to providing a safe, comfortable, and supportive environment for children during nap times, in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework and relevant health and safety legislation.

2. Policy Statement

We aim to ensure that all children at Be. have the opportunity to rest and recharge during the day in a manner that promotes their well-being and development.

3. Legal Framework

This policy is informed by:

  • The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Framework (2021).
  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • Working Together to Safeguard Children (2018).
  • The Children Act 1989 and 2004.

4. Procedure for Sleep Times

4.1 Designated Sleep Area

  • A designated, quiet area will be created for children to sleep, equipped with safe and comfortable bedding. As part of best practice as set by The Lullaby Trust.
  • The sleep area will be regularly cleaned and maintained to ensure a hygienic environment. Including clean sheets, blankets and pillows for each individual child, cleaned after each sleep session.

4.2 Supervision

Be. Independent Day Nursery – Policies for Website, updated October 2024

  • Staff will supervise children during nap times to ensure their safety and comfort.
  • Staff will check on sleeping children at regular intervals of no longer than 10 minutes, ensuring they are in a safe position, with nothing blocking their airways and comfortable. This is documented in real-time by the staff member administering the checks; including the time, date, child’s initials and signed by the staff member that has observed.

4.3 Individual Needs

  • Parents will be asked about their child's sleep routine and preferences upon enrolment. This information will guide staff in supporting each child's individual needs.
  • Children who do not wish to sleep are never forced. Parents are always notified each day if their child refused a nap on that day, to enable them to change their daily routine if necessary.

4.4 Safe Sleep Practices

To promote safe sleeping, we will adhere to the following practices:

  • Children will be placed on their backs to sleep, as recommended by the Lullaby Trust.
  • Blankets and bedding will be appropriate for the child's age and development stage and meet current safety standards.

5. Parent and Carer Communication

  • We will encourage open communication with parents regarding their child’s sleep needs and preferences.
  • Parents will be informed about our sleep procedure policy during their initial visit and will receive a copy upon enrolment.

6. Staff Training

  • All staff will be inducted on safe sleep practices and the importance of sleep for child development as part of their ongoing professional development.
  • Staff will be made aware of the procedures for responding to any concerns that may arise during sleep times.
  • Staff are not to be left alone with a sleeping child until they have completed this discussion with management and it has been signed off.

7. Review of Policy

This Sleep Procedure Policy will be reviewed annually or as necessary to ensure its effectiveness and compliance with current legislation and best practices.
