At Be. Independent Day Nursery, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. We believe that safe recruitment is a critical part of this commitment. This policy outlines our approach to recruiting staff and volunteers to ensure that we employ individuals who are suitable to work with children.
1. Aims of the Policy

2. Legal Framework
This policy is informed by the following legislation and guidelines:
- The Children Act 1989 and 2004
- The Education Act 2002
- The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006
- Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2023
- The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
3. Recruitment Procedures
Job Descriptions and Person Specifications:
- Clear job descriptions and person specifications will be developed for each role, outlining responsibilities and the skills, qualifications, and experience required.
Advertising:
- Vacancies will be advertised widely to attract a diverse pool of candidates.
- This may include local job boards, education websites, and relevant publications.
Application Process:
- Candidates will be required to complete an application form that includes personal details, employment history, qualifications, and a statement of their suitability for the role.
- A curriculum vitae (CV) may be requested as supplementary information.
4. Shortlisting and Interviews
- A selection panel will be established to shortlist candidates based on their applications.
- Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview, which will include questions related to safeguarding, child protection, and the EYFS framework.
5. Pre-Employment Checks
All successful candidates will undergo the following checks before commencing employment:

- Verification of identity and eligibility to work in the UK.

2. Criminal Record Check:
- An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be conducted.
3. References:
- Two professional references will be sought, including one from the most recent employer. References will specifically address the candidate's suitability to work with children.
4. Medical Fitness:
- A medical declaration will be required to confirm fitness to work with children.
5. Qualification Verification:
- Verification of relevant qualifications and certifications.
6. Induction and Training
- All new staff will undergo an induction process that includes training on safeguarding policies, the EYFS framework, and health and safety procedures. No staff member is allowed to be alone with children until they have received an enhanced disclosure and barring certificate.
- Ongoing training and professional development opportunities will be provided to ensure that staff remain informed of best practices and legal requirements.
- Both the nursery owner and senior management have had safer recruitment training.
- During the induction process, there is a 6 month probation period for all staff, which is under continuous monitoring and review.
7. Monitoring and Review
- This policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if necessary, in response to changes in legislation or best practice.
- We will monitor our recruitment practices to ensure they are effective and that we consistently recruit suitable individuals.
