Settling-in Policy
1. Introduction
At Be. Independent Day Nursery, we understand that starting nursery is a significant transition for children and their families. Our Settling-In Policy aims to provide a supportive and nurturing environment that helps children adjust to their new setting, ensuring they feel safe, secure, and confident.
2. Aims of the Settling-In Policy
- To facilitate a smooth transition for children entering our nursery.
- To support children in becoming familiar with their new environment, staff, and peers.
- To engage parents and caregivers in the settling-in process, fostering a collaborative approach.

3. Settling-In Process
3.1 Initial Visits
- Prior to starting, parents and children will be invited to visit the nursery. This visit allows families to meet staff, explore the facilities, and ask questions.
- Parents are encouraged to bring their child for multiple visits, if possible, to help them become familiar with the setting.
3.2 Gradual Introduction
- We offer a gradual settling-in process tailored to each child’s individual needs.
This may include:
- Short initial sessions where the parent stays with the child.
- Gradually increasing the length of sessions as the child becomes more comfortable.
- Opportunities for parents to observe their child in the nursery setting.
- The unique transition form must be completed and returned to nursery via email prior to each child starting, so that we can provide as much familiarity and comfort to every child as possible by understanding their likes and dislikes.
3.3 Key Person Approach
- Each child will be assigned a key person who will be their main point of contact. The key person will build a strong relationship with the child, helping them to feel secure and supported during the transition.
- Parents will be encouraged to share information about their child’s likes, dislikes, routines, and any specific needs to aid the settling-in process.
4. Communication with Parents
- We believe that open communication is essential during the settling-in period.
- Parents will receive regular updates about their child’s progress and
- experiences in nursery.
- Parents are encouraged to share any concerns or feedback, and we will hold
- informal meetings to discuss their child’s adjustment.
5. Support for Children
- Staff will use a variety of strategies to support children during the settling-in period, including:
- Creating a welcoming and friendly environment.
- Using familiar toys and activities to ease anxiety.
- Encouraging peer interaction through structured play and group activities.
6. Review and Adjustments
Be. Independent Day Nursery – Policies for Website, updated October 2024
- The settling-in process will be reviewed regularly to ensure it meets the needs of each child. Adjustments will be made as necessary to provide the best possible support.
- If a child is experiencing difficulties settling in, staff will work closely with parents to identify strategies that may help.
7. Equal Opportunities
Be. Independent Day Nursery is committed to inclusivity. We will make reasonable adjustments to accommodate the diverse needs of all children and families during the settling-in process.
8. Policy Review
This Settling-In Policy will be reviewed annually or as necessary to ensure its effectiveness and compliance with current legislation and best practices.
