1. Introduction
This Child Protection Policy outlines our commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children at Be. Independent Day Nursery. We recognize that every child has the right to grow up safe from harm, and we take our responsibility to protect children seriously. This policy complies with the statutory guidance set out in Working Together to Safeguard Children (2018) and the EYFS statutory framework.
2. Aims
- To provide a safe and welcoming environment for all children.
- To ensure that all staff understand their roles and responsibilities in safeguarding.
- To promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm.
- To establish effective procedures for identifying and reporting concerns about a child's welfare.
3. Responsibilities
Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
The DSL at Be. is Amy Ransom They are responsible for:
- Leading on child protection and safeguarding matters.
- Ensuring all staff are trained and understand the policy.
- Making referrals to local safeguarding authorities when necessary.
Deputy DSL
In the absence of the DSL, Natasha Hebborn-Huartson will take on these responsibilities.
4. Staff Training
All staff members will receive training on child protection and safeguarding as part of their induction and at regular intervals thereafter. Training will include:
- Recognizing signs of abuse and neglect.
- Understanding the importance of reporting concerns.
- Familiarity with the nursery’s safeguarding policies and procedures.
5. Recognizing Abuse
Staff should be aware of the four categories of abuse as defined by the UK
Government:
- Physical Abuse: Inflicting physical injury upon a child.
- Emotional Abuse: Persistent emotional maltreatment or rejection of a child.

- Sexual Abuse: Involving a child in sexual activities.
- Neglect: The failure to provide for a child’s basic needs.
6. Procedures for Reporting Concerns
If a staff member has concerns about a child’s welfare, they must:
1. Report their concerns immediately to the DSL or deputy DSL.
2. Document the concerns clearly and accurately, including dates, times, and observations.
3. Avoid discussing the concerns with anyone outside the safeguarding team.
7. Confidentiality and Information Sharing
All information relating to safeguarding concerns will be treated confidentially and shared only on a need-to-know basis, in line with the principles of GDPR and relevant legislation.
8. Whistleblowing
We encourage a culture of openness. If any staff member feels that safeguarding practices are not being followed or that a colleague is acting inappropriately, they must report their concerns to the DSL or follow the nursery’s whistleblowing policy.
9. Safer Recruitment
We adhere to safer recruitment practices as outlined in Keeping Children Safe in Education (2022), including:
- Verifying the identity of applicants.
- Obtaining references.
- Conducting Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks for all staff.
10. Partnerships with Parents and Carers
We believe in fostering strong relationships with parents and carers. We will communicate our safeguarding policies openly and encourage parents to engage with us in promoting their children’s welfare.
11. Review of Policy
This Child Protection Policy will be reviewed annually or as required to ensure it remains compliant with current legislation and best practice.
